Dyke Hikes
2010 Dyke hikes list
Hikes will be on the first Sunday of the month unless otherwise stated. For the most up-to-date information check this site or the Tamaki Makaurau Lesbian Newsletter.
If you want to join us on a hike please contact Ingrid at 027 222 0608 or by email hike @ lesbian.co.nz .
Unless otherwise stated below, the walks begin at 11am. Bring all the food and water that you'll need, clothes for any season, hat and sunblock.
The walks are graded into easy (okay for regular walking shoes, not many hills), moderate (boots recommended, expect a few hills) and hard (boots required, tracks may be rough, steep hills, reasonable fitness helps to enjoy these ones).
If you are not an experienced hiker we require you to have completed two moderate hikes before you join us on a hike graded hard.
2010
May 2nd Parau and Panto Track
This is a challenging walk with stream crossings, great views and the hills to match. From Titirangi take Woodlands Park Rd then Huia Rd for about 9km. There is a space to park on the right about 300m past Pine Ave which is on the left. The start of the track is about 200m along from the car park on the right. 5.5-6 hours. Grade: Hard
June 6th Karekare - Zion Hill Track
This track takes us up from near the Karekare beach carpark through scrub with fantastic views out to sea, then into some mature bush including huge Taraire. We head back down to the beach to an old logging track site, then walk along the beach to get back to the car park. Some moderately steep bits. 3.5 -4hrs return. We'll meet at the Karekare beach car park at 11am. Grade: Moderate
July 4th Coast to Coast in Auckland City
This walk takes us across the Auckland Isthmus. We'll meet in the CBD and take a bus to the beginning of the walk. Contact Ingrid for details. Bring change for the bus and a coffee somewhere. Expect a 4-5 hour walk through interesting urban parks and suburbs. Grade: Moderate.
August 1st Long Bay
We'll walk north of Long Bay to Okura Estuary and back along the beach if the tide allows.
This walk passes Granny's Bay, Pohutukawa Bay and goes around Piripiri Point. There are a few gentle hills. 2.5 - 3 hours. No dogs. We'll meet at the northern (furtherest) end of the Long Bay carpark. Grade: Easy
September 5th Stony Batter, Waiheke Island
We'll catch the ferry over to Waiheke and take arranged transport from the ferry terminal to Stony Batter. Please bring a torch for the tunnels and some cash to cover possible transport fees. Grade: Easy
October 3rd Kitekite Falls, Piha.
There are two options on this walk, the very gentle walk to the waterfall and back (1.25 hrs) or the more challenging (2.5hr) walk that also takes us to the waterfall then up to the top of the falls and damn site then back via the southern side of the Piha valley. To get there drive down the hill to Piha, then turn right up Glen Esk Rd. We will meet at 11am at the carpark at the end of Glen Esk Road. Grade: Easy or Moderate.
November 7th Tawhitokino
We'll take a short walk to a beach that is only accessible by foot and at low tide. Swimming or paddling is a possibility. Go early and spend a few minutes at the Clevedon Farmers Market on the way there. From Clevedon follow the signs to Kawakawa Bay. Continue to Waiti Bay at the end of Kawakawa Bay Coast Rd. The route is relatively easy with a short steep climb over Papanui Point. 2 hours max. Grade: Easy
December 5th Long Road/Whatitiri/Lower Kauri tracks.
