Dyke Hikes

Dyke Hikes

Dyke Hikes

2012 Dyke hikes list

Hikes will be on the first Sunday of the month unless otherwise stated. For the most up-to-date information check this site or the Tamaki Makaurau Lesbian Newsletter.

If you want to join us on a hike please contact Ingrid at 027 222 0608 or by email hike @ lesbian.co.nz .

Unless otherwise stated below, the walks begin at 11am. Bring all the food and water that you'll need, clothes for any season, hat and sunblock.
The walks are graded into easy (okay for regular walking shoes, not many hills), moderate (boots recommended, expect a few hills) and hard (boots required, tracks may be rough, steep hills, reasonable fitness helps to enjoy these ones).

If you are not an experienced hiker we require you to have completed two moderate hikes before you join us on a hike graded hard. Kauri Die Back: this disease is killing Kauri in the Waitakere Ranges. To avoid spreading this disease please ensure all boots and poles are clean before entering any park or reserve and follow instructions for disinfecting boots on arrival at infected and at risk sites. For more information go to www.kauridieback.co.nz

2012
January 29th Whatipu Auckland Anniversary Weekend
This hike coincides with Rainbow Weekend at Whatipu Lodge. For the complete queer experience you can stay at the lodge and then join the hike on Sunday. We'll take the Gibbons track from the campground up and around the ridges, past Orange Peel Corner to Mt Donald McLean. and then descend back to the Lodge. Meet at the car park at the end of the road to Whatipu. Bring your lunch and some snacks to share for after the hike. No dogs 6.5 hours.

5th February: Te Henga-Goldie Bush/Mokoroa Falls
This hike begins and ends at the end of Horseman Rd, Waitakere. There is limited parking so carpooling is advised. This beautiful walk makes its way to a large stream (Mokoroa Stream) and follows it to the Mokoroa falls. Consequently there are numerous stream crossings and a rock scramble. The depth of the stream will vary with rainfall. Directions: At Waitakere, turn off Waitakere Rd to Bethels Rd. After approx.600m or so turn onto Wairere Rd. Then after 7km or so take Horseman Rd and follow it to the road end where we will meet. Moderate-hard depending on rainfall. 3-4 hrs

4th March: Piha/Whites Beach
This loop track takes us through a Nikau grove, up and down hills to some great views and Whites Beach. Swimming is a definite possibility. The track will be slippery in places if there has been recent rain. Meet at the car park near the Barnett Hall community centre and surf club. Moderate. 2.5-3hrs.

1st April: Mahaukura Track, Pirongia

This track takes us to two great lookout points on Mt Pirongia. Views to the north from one lookout, and the south from the other. We will then retrace our steps to the car park. Some steep sections especially near the last lookout. May be muddy and slippery in places. Please note this hike is not going to the summit of Mt Pirongia. Meet at the Grays Rd car park near Pirongia Lodge. Hard. Approx 4.5-5hrs.

6th May: Mataitai, Clevedon

We’ll see Tanekaha and Kauri in regenerating bush, climb a few hills and cross a few streams. This walk can be slippery if there has been recent rain, and tracks can be rough in places. There is no Kauri Die Back here so far, so make sure your boots and walking poles are very clean to avoid spreading this disease. Meet at the car park on the left about 4.5km down Ness Valley Rd, which is off the Clevedon-Kaiaua Rd. Leave early to catch the awesome Clevedon farmers market nearby and the craft market in the village. Moderate. 3-4hrs.

3rd June: Comans-AhuAhu Tracks, Waitakere Ranges

This walk takes us through coastal forest and along cliff tops with awesome views and large pohutukawa. A bracing winter walk no matter what the weather. Meet at the end of Watchman Rd, which is off Karekare Rd. Moderate. 2.5hrs.

1st July: Wairoa Loop Track, Hunua

Great views on a well made track. Rewarewa line parts of the track. Some hill sections. There is no Kauri Die Back here so far, so make sure your boots and walking poles are very clean to avoid spreading this disease. Meet at the last car park on Otau rd, off Moumoukai Rd, off Hunua Rd. Easy to moderate. 3hrs.

5th August: Botanic Gardens, Manurewa

They may be magnolias and camellias as well as the southern African garden in bloom. We’ll make our way through the one end of gardens to a short bush walk and circle back again. Meet in the Botanic gardens information centre, near the carpark. Easy. 2 hrs.

Lush bush with great views at the summit. There are large kauri and rimu growing here. Mt Auckland is about 70kms north-west of the Auckland CBD. The track is signposted 3km down Glorit-Kaipara Hills Rd, off Kaipara Coast Highway (SH 16). Meet at the start of the track. Moderate-hard. 3hrs.

4th November: Kohukohunui Circuit, Hunua

A challenging hike to the highest point in the Hunuas. Good views. The bush is the Hunuas is quite different to that in the Waitakere Ranges. we’ll take the Waharau Ridge, then Kohukohunui, Mangatangi and back down Waharau Ridge. Tracks generally well maintained but can be muddy in places. Bring clothes for all seasons as conditions can change rapidly, and plenty of water as it can be very hot. Meet at the information centre at the entrance to the Waharau Regional Park. Hard. 7-8hrs.

2nd December: Helensville/Kaipara Walkway

We’ll combine two shorter walks. One is a recently developed walkway designed by the edge of the Kaipara Harbour.
